The Benefits Of Writing In A Journal

The Benefits Of Writing In A Journal

I recently sat down to read through a stack of my old journals. Thrilling, right? The dates spanned the last five years, particularly tough times in my life. I anticipated it would be a dreary activity, but was surprised to feel a surge of pride when I closed the last book. I hadn't realised how much I had changed in as little as five years! I started to consider all the good journaling can do. It can really be an act of self-care. If you're looking for a reason to pick up a pen, here are some of the benefits of writing in a journal.

9 Beauty & Wellness Products You May Not Need But Will Want To Try

Monday, 20 May 2019
It's Monday, and I'm back with another shopping post. I've already written about crystal-infused beauty, but I can't help giving the wellness beauty category another look. There's something about these unusual beauty tools and products I find so interesting. Expensive and foreign, it seems that once an ingredient or ritual is in, every brand will suddenly have a unique take on it. And the most confusing part of all is what all these products do. I'm going to try to dispel the confusion on that part, because today I'm sharing 9 beauty and wellness products you probably don't need, but it might be cool to try.

Wellness Diary: On Feeling Insecure & Comparison

Wellness Diary: On Feeling Insecure & Comparison

You may notice a bit of change in the content I create here at Jackie O My. I feel like I'm evolving. Let me explain.

I'm often stressed while creating content and trying to meet deadlines for my editorial. I ask myself why I do this. Why do I blog? Why do I want to start taking on YouTube videos? I feel like it must be for vain reasons, a search for popularity or something that's missing inside me. There are quite a few downsides to fashion blogging. I'm a perfectionist, and often stress over the quality of my work. I sometimes feel like I don't have time to pursue other hobbies, like painting or music, or learning a new language. More than anything else, my unhappiness comes from comparing myself to others, especially on Instagram. I compare my appearance to theirs, hold my modest victories up against their greatest achievements. You may have seen my last video, a Sephora shopping vlog. Watching this video made me realize something wasn't working. Why do I feel bad after watching my own work?

Watching yourself on video, all of your insecurities are magnified

In my vlog, I got a haircut that was quite short, and it took me a few hours to realise it highlighted all the other features I don't like about my appearance. (I won't get into them here, but will talk more about them in the video that will accompany this post.) I was very upset that night, calling myself all kinds of unkind words and wondering why if short hair looks good on such and such, why not on me?

This is the comparison trap. Anytime you scroll through Instagram, magazines or fashion blogs, subconsciously you are comparing yourself or your life to that person (unless you are very lucky and self-controlled!). I realise now that I feel very guilty about the content I've been creating lately. They've all been shopping hauls, or shopping vlogs, and I have to admit it doesn't feel good to put that content out into the world. For one, it's extremely unoriginal. But more importantly, I am contributing to the idea that we all need more, and need to compare what we have, are, and look like to others on social media.

I'm going to try to create a little more consciously now, and consume less of that content too. I hope you will keep in mind the next time you scroll through Instagram that no one has the perfect life, but you are perfect as you are. You don't need more, or need to be more. You are enough.

So, we're almost halfway through the new year. You made your healthy resolutions in January, and for a while you did great, but now your motivation is dwindling and you're finding it a bit harder to stick to your goal plans. Sound familiar? I know it does to me!

This year, my resolutions are to eat out less and practice yoga regularly, but lately (okay, consistently), I've been struggling to keep it up. If you're like me and need a little pep talk to keep those goals, here are five ways you can keep your new year's resolutions going strong.

Start with a solid goal

It's time to step back and assess whether or not your goal is an attainable one. Maybe you set the bar a bit too high, or maybe you just weren't specific enough. That's okay! It's alright to modify something that isn't working for you. The foundation of building a good habit is starting with a resolution that is simple and realistic, and making a specific plan to complete it. I always say it's best to start with a smaller step and build on it. Instead of vowing to go to the gym every single day, why not start with promising to work out every Sunday and Wednesday at first?

Vent to a friend

When we're struggling with something, it can be tempting to bottle it up and put on a brave face, but it's totally okay to get support from your friends and loved ones! Let them know you're trying hard to make changes and vent out your frustrations. You might just feel lighter.

Track your progress

Tracking your progress is by far the best way to make a new habit stick. I use the Productive app on my phone to see where I need to focus my efforts more. I also use Pacifica, which has an awesome healthy habits tracker.

Celebrate small victories

Treat yourself when you hit milestones in your goals. Rewards can be anything from your fave food to buying yourself a little gift; the important thing is acknowledging your progress and associating it with something nice.

Be patient

Be patient with both the process and yourself. Building a habit is a long-term endeavour, so don't beat yourself up if you go off track or skip your healthy habit for a few days. This will only lead to major discouragement and zap your motivation. Instead, stay positive and give yourself time to rest if you need it. Have the same compassion for yourself that you'd have for a friend. Remember, it's about the journey, not the outcome!

With these tips and a little work, you'll have your resolutions back on track in no time!

Delicious nutrient packed smoothie. Photo by Kate La Vie.
This post is a bit inspired by another blogger I love. Kate La Vie wrote a great, detailed post about nutrients and smoothies she loves, and it was such perfect timing.

I've been researching healthier food options this week. I'm in a bad place, nutritionally and physically. A self-professed french fry addict, I barely have the energy lately to climb a flight of stairs, and I'm so past blaming a pending cold for my lack of strength.

Wellness Diary: Habits For Mental Clarity In The New Year

Wellness Diary: Habits For Mental Clarity In The New Year | Jackie O My
The Birth Of Venus, Botticelli.

We're entering the new year in just a few days, and to mark the occasion, I'd like to write a Wellness Diary post about a huge but often overlooked part of overall wellness: mental health. You may have noticed my absence from the blogosphere lately. I've been taking some time away to focus on my own mental health. I've struggled with anxiety for many years, although it isn't something I open up about a lot on social media. I try to keep my personal life and my blog life separate for the most part, although I appreciate the strong women out there who bare all on their blogs, including their struggles with anxiety disorders. I'm so thankful for their posts on the topic, so I decided there was no better time to share my own tips on living well while taking care of your mental space. Here are a few things I learned while attending wellness classes over the winter season.

My No-Shop Progress: Did I Curb My Spending?

Monday, 8 October 2018
Free People Floral Dress

It's been ages since I vowed to spend less and cherish my current wardrobe more. To be honest, I've been putting off writing this post for the past month, because my results are less than spectacular. However, I'm now laying out my no-shop progress for all to see. Read on to find out if I was able to curb my spending habit.

Did I change my habits?

Short answer: nope.

Although I did spend slightly less overall, I did not decrease my shopping, and perhaps spent even longer browsing online shops than usual. One of my biggest reasons for cutting down on shopping was time-saving, but knowing I had less money budgeted to spend, I found myself dedicated to finding a great bargain to justify spending anything at all.

The beginning of my downfall was the reintroduction of the Weekly Wow deals at Sephora. I'm rarely a impressed by a sale, but oh my gosh. Things I'd been eyeing were down to half price. It was like losing money if I didn't snag the deal.

I quickly discovered a loophole: exchanging. It started off innocently enough. I needed to make a return on a product at Sephora, but could only have store credit. Not wanting to "waste my money", of course I had to pick out something nice. So when the Weekly Wow deals started, I figured maybe I had a few more things kicking around I wasn't using. Soon I was spending actual money again to make up the difference.

My folly highlights the importance of airtight, clear cut and specific rules. I suspected I was a bit vague with my rules, so I expected to find loopholes eventually. If you participate in a no-shop, I recommend making a plan for what you will do with store credits and gift cards. One great option is to decide beforehand that you will only use them to buy gifts (not for yourself).

So what will I do differently?

If you've tried a no-shop and made some purchases anyway, I totally think it's best not to just give up altogether! Long-term lifestyle changes take time; the only way to learn to act differently is to make consistent small efforts, again and again.

Personally, I've already come up with a few tweaks for my no shop rules:

I already only buy items I have listed as "needs", but I've come to understand that "should buy eventually" doesn't necessarily mean need to purchase right now. I've also decided I have all the makeup I need for the time being, and won't be purchasing any more unless I run out.

I'm going to be using the clothing I have in my closet that I've never worn for some outfit posts coming up, and I'm really excited to wear these things.

Have you taken part in a shopping ban lately? Would you? Let me know below!

Wellness Diary: A Beginner's Guide To Healthy Eating

Wednesday, 15 August 2018
I've been talking a lot about skincare lately and it's gotten me thinking about the health of my skin as a whole. Your skin is actually a really good indicator of your overall health, so dryness, dullness and other skin issues are definitely not something to be overlooked or covered up. Don't get me wrong: I love creams and masks, but there's only so much topical treatments can do for your skin in the long-term. Now I'm focusing on getting a healthy glow from the inside-out by making sure I'm getting all the nutrients my skin needs.

In my past wellness diary posts, I focused on the importance of exercise, and spoke a bit about moderation when eating unhealthily; the focus of this post will be healthier eating options. Remember, I'm totally clueless when it comes to nutrition. I eat out daily and am a proud french fry connoisseur. I do love the idea of health and nutrition, but in the end, I reach for comfort foods almost every time. So, is there a balance that can be struck?

It doesn't have to be boring!

In an interview with Urban Outfitters Blog, Long Beach chef Ella Calderon shares brunch recipes that can only be described as beautiful and packed with nutrition. I really recommend that post, because even if you're not a fan of her sparkling grapefruit and rose water drink, you won't be able to deny any longer that healthy food has the potential to be colorful, vibrant, and delicious. Think about the kinds of flavors you love; becoming accustomed to healthier meals is a matter of finding the dishes you love, and creating those tastes in a healthier way.

A few craving swaps to consider:

If you're like me, you will need the most basic tips for simple and easy transitions to healthier options. Luckily, lifestyle and food bloggers have us covered.

Each and every night, I have sugar cravings right before bed. Imagine how much more fulfilling it would be to whip up pancakes using ingredients like oats, banana, strawberry jam and coconut flakes instead of reaching for a handful of snack-size chocolate bars, which offer very little in the way of actual hunger fulfilment. Try this Guilt-Free Strawberry Coconut Pancakes recipe by the lovely Kate La Vie for your next sugar fix.

The second recipe I'm totally on board with is for something that I (and so many others) can absolutely never resist - pizza. Design Love Fest created a homemade, cast-iron skillet version of the tempting dish using powerfully healthy ingredients like avocado, red onion, and arugula. It's a way better option than delivery if you can't resist a cheesy pie this weekend.

Of course, you can find a healthier version of practically any food, but what if you don't have the time or energy to cook? Even with well-thought-out food plans and a fridge full of fresh ingredients, sometimes you just want a snack. Here are a few ways to eat healthy on the go.

Low-effort snack ideas:

1. Fresh Blueberries and strawberries make a sweet snack alternative to sugary treats.
2. Sandwiches packed with double-the-veggies, like tomatoes, onion, peppers and lettuce can never go wrong.
3. Rice is such a great impromptu meal option, because it's quick, low-cost, and can be mixed with veggies and poultry/meat for protein and nourishment. Recipes also vary wildly, which offers variety.
4. Bananas are great on the go, in a bowl on your desk or in your bag.

8 Things You Can Buy Right Now To Harness The Beauty Of Crystals

Saturday, 21 July 2018
It's crystal clear: whether you believe in their mystical abilities or not, crystals have been used in wellness and beauty regimes for thousands of years. Among others, their purported benefits include healing and spiritual growth and banishing negative energy while attracting positive vibes. And now they promise to help your natural beauty shine from within.

While the benefits of crystals are debated, their beauty cannot be. Are you looking for something to make your day feel just that much more magical? Here are eight things you can buy right now to bring the power of crystals into your beauty routine.

Herbivore PRISM Exfoliating Glow Potion

Okay, so it's not made of actual crystals to my knowledge, but it certainly shimmers, so I'm going to allow it. Herbivore's PRISM Glow Potion is "part essence, part serum, pure potion".
This nearly magical and truly natural water-based potion exfoliates the top layer of dead skin cells and de-clogs pores to reveal fresh, smooth and glowing skin...A rainbow of natural fruit acids and hydrating botanicals combine to gently resurface, even skin tone, improve texture, increase clarity and boost hydration - for your best skin yet, naturally.
This formula contains Rose Water, Aloe Water, Bilberry Lactic, Sugar Cane Glycolic, Orange Peel Citric and Apple Malic Acid. I'm not sure what some of those ingredients are, but they certainly sound fresh and natural. This is one girl who would love to get her glow on with the PRISM potion.

Find it at Sephora for $80 CAD.

My Shopping Habit & How You Can Join Me On A No-Shop

My Shopping Addiction & How You Can Join Me On A No-Shop | Jackie O My

Shopping has always been something of a hobby for me. When I was young, my mother would pick me up from school each day and take me to the mall. We'd get ice-cream and browse; handbags for her, Barbies for me. I still feel so comfortable at that mall. I've often referred to it as my "second home", a safe place in a world constantly changing.

Just love this colorful photo of fresh foods from DesignLoveFest's article on staying inspired to cook.

It's official: I'm one month into my fitness journey. I hope you are closer to reaching your wellness goals than I am because I have not done as swimmingly as I had hoped to.

If I've learned one thing this month, it's that major lifestyle and diet changes are not easy. It's not a simple matter of deciding not to be unhealthy and saying no to your cravings at each meal time; it's avoiding that unhealthy habit dozens of times each day until you finally, begrudgingly, give in and order a cheeseburger. Afterwards, I'm left with a slight shame and a half-hearted promise to eat broccoli the next day.

Avocado Toast Salad

I recently read an article on Man Repeller in which Amelia Diamond described finally learning to grocery shop at the age of 29. At 26, I consider Amelia #healthgoals, as I'm still putting off "getting healthy". I may give off the impression of an active, healthy person on social media, but the truth is, I rarely exercise, and eat more takeaway than nutritious meals. In fact, my diet is more than likely 50% french fry. Now my body (and mood) has been paying the toll.

I need to get serious about my body's wellness.

24 Simple Ways To Practice Self-Care

This week, I've been thinking about all the ways daily life can take a toll on us. Let's face it: life is never perfectly calm. More often than not, we've got a lot of things going on at once. So how can we ever be truly well if we're stressing all the time? The trick is taking time out to do something for ourselves to alleviate that tension. Wanna learn how? Here are 24 simple ways you can practice self-care.

You Are Beautiful

Friday, 21 July 2017
white flowers in green plant

Remember My Pale Skin's inspirational video about the unrealistic standard of beauty? It is one of my all time favorite videos on YouTube, and it continues to move me every time I watch it. I watch it when I feel insecure, and am reminded of two great truths about beauty. The first is that there is a huge double standard when it comes to appearance; if you're deemed unattractive, it's like a fatal fault in your character, one that is your responsibility to fix for the benefit of others. If you're attractive, however, you're perceived as fake and conceited.

The second truth is that every woman, no matter how beautiful, thin, or popular, is subjected to this same harsh criticism. There really is no winning. There seems to be an entire world of people out there that want you to feel bad about yourself. These people want you to feel inferior and insecure. The nasty comments on your Instagram pictures are not coming from a place of truth, but rather from the hope of hurting you as much as possible simply because they can. As if your appearance has anything to do with your right to feel happiness.

The Art Of Becoming Unbusy

Thursday, 18 May 2017
Flowers in bike basket

For the past several months, my to-do list has been packed. I jot down a nightly list of everything I "need" to do the next day, including eating right, getting some exercise, practicing the piano, writing either a blog post or creatively for practice, journaling, meditating, posting on my social media accounts, reading from the giant stack of books that's collected next to my bed, practicing painting, doing yoga, and running any extra errands I may have. On top of that, I've been working on three different "challenges" simultaneously: a blog post challenge, a happiness challenge, and a self-improvement challenge. All of this has left me very little time unwind, and even relaxing has started to feel like just another item to check off a list. No wonder I've been so stressed!

Why It's Okay To Be Upset Over Little Things

Monday, 24 April 2017
Why It's Okay To Be Upset Over Little Things

For the past week, I've been stuck in a bad mood rut. Usually, I breeze right by minor setbacks, taking them in stride. Now, they're hitting me hard, leaving me grumpy and unsure what I'm even so upset about. I'm a big believer in the power of positivity, so I figured I could just will my bad feelings away, or at least squash them down until they disappeared on their own. Unfortunately, bad feelings will come out, no matter how hard you try to hold them in, and sometimes at inconvenient times.
