5 Photography Mistakes That Will Ruin Your Outfit Post

Monday 30 April 2018

My favorite kind of posts to write are outfit posts. I've been photographing my own outfit posts (no photographer boyfriend here!) for about a year now, and while my photos are still by no means perfect, my skills have drastically improved through trial and error. Today I'd like to share the biggest lessons I've learned in my time fashion blogging. All of these tips are beginner-friendly, no technical skill required. Here are 5 photography mistakes I used to make that will ruin your outfit post.

1. Not taking enough photos:

You can follow every photography tip and trick out there and still come out with nothing but unusable photos. There are some things you simply can't plan for, from gusts of wind to blinking. The best practice is to take more than you'll need and choose the very best ones. I usually take around eighty and choose eight. I use the continuous shooting mode on my camera to capture multiple shots of the same pose to ensure I'll have one that's just right. Of course, how many pictures you take is up to you - just keep snapping until you feel like you have a few great shots.

Review: The Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette | Jackie O My

I've heard so much buzz about the Urban Decay Naked palettes; many beauty bloggers consider them to be the holy grail of eye shadows, praising their buttery texture and long-lasting quality. Since I've been on the hunt for the perfect everyday palette, I decided to dip my toes into the high-end makeup pool once again and try out the Urban Decay Naked Basics. Read on to find out what I thought!

5 Things I love: 04/23/18

5 Things I love: 04/23/18 | Jackie O My
Photos from Urban Outfitters and DesignLoveFest.

How has everyone's week been? New posts have been nowhere to be found on Jackie O My for a few weeks now; I've taken a break from writing to work on the behind-the-scenes part of blogging, including redesigning the site layout (which will be revealed later this week!) I've also been enjoying some beautiful weather here in British Columbia for a change, and it's put me in a sunny mood. I think it's reflected in this week's 5 Things I Love post, no? Anyway, here's some reading to start your week off right.

5 Things I Love:

1. Looking for a bit of home decor inspiration? Connie Cao of Connie & Luna has been sharing her lovely new home, and I love her sense of style. Check out her new bedroom here and her plant-filled reading corner here.

2. I've never even heard of pupusas before, but after seeing DesignLoveFest's colorful photography, I might just try her recipe (which sounds delicious, by the way).

*Edit: Unfortunately, the delicious pupusa recipe has been taken down, but Bri has us covered with an equally-delicious Chicken Salad, which is my favorite healthy-ish food.

3. Author Megan Nesmith wrote a totally relateable article for Man Repeller about dressing better to pull yourself out of a rut. This is one of my major goals in life lately, since I too have fallen into the sweatpants-and-old-jumper trap. I can whole-heartedly agree with Megan's assessment; I feel like a new person already after spending only 5 extra minutes to look decent every morning.

4. Niki of My Scandinavian Home shared this stunning bohemian home, and I can't get over it. The Topanga Canyon, California home belongs to Malia Grace Biachi-Mau, a jewelry maker with a keen sense of style.

5. I am all about the button-up dress trend right now. Here's a great one from Urban Outfitters!

What are your favorite things this week?

Brand Love: Tio Y Tia

Brand Love: Tio Y Tia

Tio Y Tia is a hat line inspired by the American southwest, handmade by the oldest hatmaker in America. Nicole Najafi, Johanna Peet, and Lucy Laught are the women behind the brand. The hats are designed in New York and made of wool from ethically raised sheep in Texas. Each hat is thoughtfully produced and crafted with so much care.

There are currently two styles available from Tio Y Tia, the Dolores and the Gambler. Both are absolutely beautiful.

What drew me to this brand, aside from the love and care put into their craft, was the amazing photography; set against the backdrop of the Mojave desert, these hats stand out. It's definitely worth a foray into classic western fashion.

Moroccan Getaway: Riad Jardin Secret

The Riad Jardin Secret (Secret Garden) is a six-room hideaway located in Marrakesh, Morocco. It boasts lush, plant-filled terraces, a luxurious pink rooftop, and even an artist residency. Two Parisians, formerly successful in the fashion industry, reinvented the hotel after discovering it on a trip to Marrakesh Medina:

Wellness Diary: 01/04/18

Avocado Toast Salad

I recently read an article on Man Repeller in which Amelia Diamond described finally learning to grocery shop at the age of 29. At 26, I consider Amelia #healthgoals, as I'm still putting off "getting healthy". I may give off the impression of an active, healthy person on social media, but the truth is, I rarely exercise, and eat more takeaway than nutritious meals. In fact, my diet is more than likely 50% french fry. Now my body (and mood) has been paying the toll.

I need to get serious about my body's wellness.
