Quickie Review: Herbivore Blue Tansy Resurfacing Clarity Mask

Tuesday, 17 March 2020
Like many of us, I've been feeling a little under the weather for the past few weeks. As such, my usual skincare routine has fallen completely by the wayside, and it shows. My skin has been especially dry and uneven, so when I found some samples of Herbivore's Blue Tansy Resurfacing Clarity Mask when I was cleaning out my skincare drawer the other day, I felt like it was just the thing I needed.

From Herbivore:
A truly natural mask that gently clarifies acne-prone skin with Fruit Enzymes, White Willow Bark, Aloe, and Blue Tansy Essential Oil to soothe the appearance of redness.
Including ingredients like papaya and pineapple, this mask is meant to target blemishes, pores, and uneven skin texture. It holds impressive reviews on Sephora and is vegan, cruelty free, and even earned Sephora's Clean Beauty seal of approval. So far, so good, right?

First Impressions

My first impression of this mask is the smell. Oh heavens. It smells exactly like cough syrup, with a faint note of black licorice. Admittedly, two of my least favorite scents, so I'm probably biased from this point on. The texture was not unlike cough syrup either - a sticky but thin blue liquid, with a swirl of moss green suspiciously blooming in the center of my palm. My stomach turned and I debated whether I wanted to actually slather this on my face. For science, I went full speed ahead.

The mask is invisible once applied, though the smell is just as potent (seven minutes in I was beginning to develop a headache). On the face, it feels tight, which of course is not surprising for a face mask.

A little bit of that texture in action, courtesy of Herbivore's Instagram:

My Results

This mask did not wow me. I'm not even a little impressed, tbh.

Let's start with the application: there's a little confusion about how long to actually leave the product on your face. Herbivore recommends applying a thin layer for 15-20 minutes, but clarifies that people with sensitive skin (which I would identify as) should leave it on for just 5 minutes. Meanwhile, Sephora's product listing does not mention the sensitive skin time adjustment. Since the sample packs didn't have any printed directions at all, I decided to compromise by leaving it on for 10 minutes.

It did tingle a little as Herbivore said it might, so no major issues. When I washed it away with a generous amount of warm water and patted dry as per instructions, my skin's appearance was... not changed very much at all. So lacklustre, in fact, that I didn't even bother taking a photo for this article.

I mean, I get it: this is a skin mask, not a magic potion. However, my redness was not reduced at all, nor was my skin much softer. My pores did look tighter, but unfortunately, they felt tighter too. My face had become dry and uncomfortable, which is the last thing I look for in a face mask.

Final Thoughts

To reach the promised results, this mask is recommended to be used every other day for five days, and then 2 - 3 times per week to maintain whatever results you achieved. Maybe my skin would have been terrific using this product for that specified amount of time. However, that will definitely not be happening for three reasons:

First, the smell truly made me nauseated. With ingredients like papaya and pineapple, I was hoping for a light, fruity scent. I'm sure most people won't mind the scent as I did, and might even enjoy it. I just was not one of those people. Secondly, my skin feels so sapped of moisture, I do worry that using the mask several times a week would damage my skin. And the first two reasons bring in the last one, that I would now have to actually spend money on this product to continue using it as part of my skincare regime, and I just do not want to do that after my first experience. So for me, it looks like Herbivore's Blue Tansy Resurfacing Mask is a fail. Now, please excuse me while I slather up with extra moisturiser.

Have you tried this mask? I'd love to hear your experience with Herbivore's products.

Review: Anastasia Beverly Hills Norvina Palette

Review: Anastasia Beverly Hills Norvina Palette | Jackie O My
Photo: Anastasia Beverly Hills.
Have you been dreaming of the heavenly hues of Anastasia Beverly Hill's Norvina Palette? If so, you're not alone. I've been wanting to snag this palette for such a long time. I was instantly taken with this palette; its pretty celestial shades were a makeup dream come true for me, and I considered it the perfect palette.

I already own the Modern Renaissance palette and love it, so I expected the same amazing quality from the Norvina palette that Anastasia always provides. Unfortunately, I was left more than a little disappointed. Let's get into that.

The Details

Norvina Soare, the president of Anastasia Beverly Hills, designed this to be her go-to palette. There are fourteen buttery shades; seven are metallic and seven are matte. The shadows are 0.74 g each, and the shades are: Dreamer, Base, Summer, Soul, Wild Child, Incense, Rose Gold, Love, Celestial, Volatile, Dazzling, Eccentric, Drama, and Passion. Like Modern Renaissance, the packaging is a sleek faux velvet box that includes a mirror and dual-ended brush. This palette costs $55.00 CAD at Sephora.

Norvina said this of her palette:
I have always wanted to create a palette that embodies my spirit. I'm a dreamer at heart and get lost in my own fantasy world daily. It's a whimsical place that leaves you feeling carefree. If I had to explain how those colors made me feel, I would say "Happy".
Norvina's wisteria color scheme does bring a smile to my face, but will her palette?

9 Beauty & Wellness Products You May Not Need But Will Want To Try

Monday, 20 May 2019
It's Monday, and I'm back with another shopping post. I've already written about crystal-infused beauty, but I can't help giving the wellness beauty category another look. There's something about these unusual beauty tools and products I find so interesting. Expensive and foreign, it seems that once an ingredient or ritual is in, every brand will suddenly have a unique take on it. And the most confusing part of all is what all these products do. I'm going to try to dispel the confusion on that part, because today I'm sharing 9 beauty and wellness products you probably don't need, but it might be cool to try.

BOSCIA Luminizing Black Mask
Photo from Sephora.
Hey! I'm back with a quickie review.

I've been so obsessed with skincare lately! I used my very first mask last month with amazing results (the Saturday Skin Spotlight Brightening Mask is heavenly) and my skin feels so pampered afterwards, I've been making them a weekly skin treat. I don't usually write reviews on products I didn't actually purchase, but I really wanted to share my thoughts on this product.

Masks aren't cheap, so this week I used the Boscia Luminizing Black Mask, which I received as a sample with my last Sephora order. You can find this mask at Sephora for $45.00 CAD.

8 Things You Can Buy Right Now To Harness The Beauty Of Crystals

Saturday, 21 July 2018
It's crystal clear: whether you believe in their mystical abilities or not, crystals have been used in wellness and beauty regimes for thousands of years. Among others, their purported benefits include healing and spiritual growth and banishing negative energy while attracting positive vibes. And now they promise to help your natural beauty shine from within.

While the benefits of crystals are debated, their beauty cannot be. Are you looking for something to make your day feel just that much more magical? Here are eight things you can buy right now to bring the power of crystals into your beauty routine.

Herbivore PRISM Exfoliating Glow Potion

Okay, so it's not made of actual crystals to my knowledge, but it certainly shimmers, so I'm going to allow it. Herbivore's PRISM Glow Potion is "part essence, part serum, pure potion".
This nearly magical and truly natural water-based potion exfoliates the top layer of dead skin cells and de-clogs pores to reveal fresh, smooth and glowing skin...A rainbow of natural fruit acids and hydrating botanicals combine to gently resurface, even skin tone, improve texture, increase clarity and boost hydration - for your best skin yet, naturally.
This formula contains Rose Water, Aloe Water, Bilberry Lactic, Sugar Cane Glycolic, Orange Peel Citric and Apple Malic Acid. I'm not sure what some of those ingredients are, but they certainly sound fresh and natural. This is one girl who would love to get her glow on with the PRISM potion.

Find it at Sephora for $80 CAD.

Review: Saturday Skin Spotlight Brightening Mask

Sunday, 15 July 2018
Saturday Skin Spotlight Brightening Products
Photos from Saturday Skin.

Saturday Skin is a South Korean beauty brand that has amassed a cult following. Praised by Nylon, Elle, Allure, and even featured by Teen Vogue as a beauty game-changer in 2016, this line of vegan skincare products may just be a beauty guru's best kept skin secret.

Of course you may recognize them as one of the most gorgeous products in the skincare isle, thanks to their trademark millennial pink packaging.

For years I've been hearing the wonders of K-beauty and Korean skincare products, and I've longed to try them locally. Saturday Skin lays claim to a special "Cha-7 es complex", a formula derived from natural ingredients that promises to promote your skin's natural regeneration process. That's a pretty big promise. So is this one of those amazing Korean beauty secrets?

Their philosophy sure sounds amazing:
We live for Saturdays. Sleeping in, staying up. Daydreaming and adventure-seeking. All play, no work. We believe your skin should feel as good as you do when you wake up refreshed: happy, healthy and bright. Developed to reveal your clearest, dewiest complexion, Saturday Skin is a weekend in a bottle.
Um, yes please! Can any product live up to this promise? Let's find out.

First impressions

First, some real talk: I have never used a sheet mask before. Therefore, I had more than a little trouble unfolding the mask itself. It was slimy and cold, but I'm guessing this is how most sheet masks feel. I looked and felt ridiculous wearing it, and briefly wondered why I was doing this to myself. Perfectly dewy skin, I reminded myself, and left it on for the recommended ten minutes.

Saturday Skin Spotlight Brightening Masks

My skin was definitely softer when I removed it. It looked and felt moisturized and healthy. This is not a mask that needs to be washed off; rather, you smooth the serum left on your face into your skin. I initially assumed "brightening" was the same thing as lightening, and therefore thought the look of my freckles might diminish, but this wasn't the case. My results were good enough, though, that I decided I wanted to give this mask another try the following week.

Take two!

One thing I realized immediately is they pack a ton of essence into each mask packet. Following a great tip from the review section on Sephora by Jillie A, I kept the excess to use as a mask the following week. I was left with basically a Jelly mask, which was much easier to apply. I smoothed the essence onto my skin, this time leaving it on for fifteen minutes for good measure. I wiped it off with a face towel, avoiding washing as per the instructions.

The next morning, my skin literally felt like silk. It was crazy soft! and so glowy. I don't want to brag, but I'm totally going to use the word radiant. I was so happy with my results.

The verdict

So would I recommend this product?

That's a big fat yes! Although I didn't lose my freckles, my skin was softer, smoother, and even seemed healthier. I noticed a significant reduction of redness, and felt totally refreshed. Saturday Skin lived up to all its promises. I purchased my mask from Sephora for CAD $7.50, and my results totally blew me away. How crazy is that?

This mask is definitely worth snagging if you're looking to treat your skin with a cool drink of moisture. You won't be disappointed.

You Are Beautiful

Friday, 21 July 2017
white flowers in green plant

Remember My Pale Skin's inspirational video about the unrealistic standard of beauty? It is one of my all time favorite videos on YouTube, and it continues to move me every time I watch it. I watch it when I feel insecure, and am reminded of two great truths about beauty. The first is that there is a huge double standard when it comes to appearance; if you're deemed unattractive, it's like a fatal fault in your character, one that is your responsibility to fix for the benefit of others. If you're attractive, however, you're perceived as fake and conceited.

The second truth is that every woman, no matter how beautiful, thin, or popular, is subjected to this same harsh criticism. There really is no winning. There seems to be an entire world of people out there that want you to feel bad about yourself. These people want you to feel inferior and insecure. The nasty comments on your Instagram pictures are not coming from a place of truth, but rather from the hope of hurting you as much as possible simply because they can. As if your appearance has anything to do with your right to feel happiness.

Geometric Nails

Geometric Nails

Today I tried these gold geometric nail wraps by RAD in You're so fine. I've never used nail wraps before; in fact, I usually stick to clear polish. But as soon as I saw this nail design, I was in love. It's simple and dainty, but still has a bit of edge.
