I've been sharing a special
Brand Love series on beautiful brand
Selkie this season. I previously posted about their
first campaign and followed up with a gorgeous floral lookbook of
Sophia, another amazing
Selkie muse. I'm here at last to complete the post trio with a lookbook featuring
Selkie girl Laney, a model, artist, and curator living in New York. But first, let's talk about the myth behind the name. What is
Selkie?
In Irish, Scottish, Icelandic and Scandinavian folklore, the Selkie is a woman of the ocean who lives inside a seal skin. When she comes up to the rocks she slips out of her skin to bask in the sun. If a man is able to steal her skin while she sleeps, she is forced to become his wife and live on land. But, if the selkie finds her skin again, she transforms back into her true form and immediately returns to the sea, free.
I just love that story. Being a big fan of folklore is one of three factors that drew me to this brand. The other two: whimsical color palettes and imaginative photography. I love photography with an unstaged feel, and these shots of Laney walking down the street are perfect. A little more about
Laney:
Delaney is a muse in every sense of the word...As a body activist and artist in New York City, Laney works hard to build new paths for women. Being an industry "in between" size and only 5'7", she knows the difficulties first hand of being an irregular "curve" model in 2018.
Just the sort of role-model we need IMO, and a great note to end this post series on. So, what do you think of this fanciful brand?
